First in a three-volume series focusing on promoter/manager Jack Hurley. In addition to telling the story of his early years and of Petrolle’s career, Volume 1 includes tales of Russie LeRoy, Luther McCarty, Mike Gibbons, Young Jack Thompson, Art (What-A-Man) Shires, Primo Carnera, Jack Dempsey, Charley Retzlaff, Billy McCarney, Tex Rickard, Doc Kearns, and a host of other ring personalities. The volume also looks behind the scenes at boxing promotion in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Newark, and New York in the 1920s and ’30s. Other themes traced in the series include the lineage of the heavyweight title from 1919 to 1971, power struggles for control of boxing at Madison Square Garden and the Chicago Stadium from the 1920s to the ’50s, and TV’s devastating effect on live boxing in the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s.
