Assembled here for the first time, this collection of essays and articles on boxing by bestselling author Katherine Dunn presents a rare treat for both readers of her fiction and for aficionados of the sport known as the “sweet science.” With her ear for the vernacular and eye for the telling detail, these pieces range from accounts of the classic bouts of such giants as Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, to the women boxers like Lucia Rijker and Dallas Malloy who broke the gender barrier of the sport, as well as the dedicated amateur fighters, has-beens, trainers, promoters, cut men and rabid enthusiasts-amongst which Dunn numbers herself-in this celebration of heart and passion that is the One Ring Circus.
KATHERINE DUNN has written about and reported on the sport of boxing since 1981. Her prize-winning boxing journalism has appeared in many publications from The Ring and KO Magazine to Vogue, Esquire and Playboy. Her column, Punch Lines, ran weekly in the Skanner Newspaper in Portland and Seattle from 1982 to 1995. She is currently associate editor of cyberboxingzone.com, and internet boxing encyclopedia and magazine.
In 1987, Dunn and two colleagues wrote the original legislation to create the state commission that regulates boxing, wrestling, and the martial arts in the state of Oregon. In 2004, Dunn and photographer Jim Lommasson won the Lange-Taylor Documentary Prize for their work on the book “Shadow Boxers.”
Dunn’s third novel, Geek Love, was a finalist for the 1998 National Book Award. She is also the author of the novels “Attic” and “Truck.” She lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
