Former flyweight world champion and Mexican ring legend Efrén “Alacran” Torres passed away at the age 66 on February 25, 2010 at his residence in Guadalajara, Mexico. Torres boxed professionally from 1959 to 1972 and had a professional record of 53-9-1 with 35 KOs. He will always be remembered for his three epic battles with Chartchai Chionoi from Thailand. Torres won the WBC championship with an eighth round TKO over Chionoi in Mexico City. Torres fought the top fighters of his era, defeating Chionoi, Susumu Hanagata, Pascual Perez, Jose Medel, Octavio “Famoso” Gomez, Eduardo “Raton” Mojica and Bob Allotey.
